He put forensic medicine and pathology 'on the map', and played a part in its recognition as a distinct science in the 20th century. But Spilsbury's was a rather sad life - a lifelong 'loner', who struggled to form and maintain close relationships, he developed an inflated and ultimately dangerous belief in his own infallibility as an expert.
It was revealing that so many of his cases re The grim but fascinating story of Britain's first honorary pathologist to the Home Office, Bernard Spilsbury. It was revealing that so many of his cases resulted in successful conviction, but many of these would now be considered as unsafe.
As usual, the government was complicit in various cover-ups, despite a growing disquiet among Spilsbury's contemporaries. Andrew Rose provides a fairly flat account of Spilsbury's life - it's not really a biography as such, given that relatively little is known about his personal life.

My only real complaint is the use of so much dense legal jargon - it was a bit of a slog.
